SELCO Foundation is an open-source research and development organization whose role is to implement solutions to generate learnings which can be replicated in various developing contexts. The Agri vertical at SELCO Foundation aims to capture these learnings from implementations and programs which can be used for cross learning within the organization and disseminated to the sector as a whole within the country and globally. These learnings include understanding programs and the sector from an outward/external manner as well which will be achieved through thorough research and will be used to inform programs within the organization.

Context of the program:

India’s Tomato and Potato production is the second largest in the world. Tomatoes are typically cultivated as a cash crop. Production is concentrated in the Southern and Central states including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, MP, Gujarat, Odisha and, which contribute to the highest tomato production in the country. Similarly, potatoes are one of the main commercial crops mainly growing in HP, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Punjab, UP, MP, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka and Assam.

The post-harvest losses of tomato and potato alone accounts for more than 10 to 15%. The primary causes of which are poor storage and transportation facilities. Other range of issues include limited technical know-how on good agricultural practices, imperfect market knowledge, inadequate market access and less involvement in value addition process. In the absence of proper storage facilities, farmers of perishable commodities such as fruits and vegetables have been rendered devoid of their livelihoods in both immediate and the long term.
