JOB DESCRIPTION: CONSULTANT NURSING TEACHER, SWASTHYA SEVIKA NURSE AIDE ABOUT SNEHA A secular, Mumbai-based non-profit organisation, SNEHA believes that investing in women’s health is essential to building viable urban communities. SNEHA is 450+ persons strong, innovative and progressive organization that works on health and nutrition in urban slum pockets with women and their families. SNEHA follows the life-cycle approach to health and nutrition, by intervening at critical junctures (adolescence, preconception, conception, pregnancy, postnatal, infancy and toddlerhood, family planning) to ensure improved health and nutritional outcomes for women and children living in some of Mumbai’s most vulnerable and deprived slums and in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as well. SNEHA recognises that, in order to improve urban health standards, our initiatives must target both care seekers and care providers. We work with communities residing in informal settlements to empower women and communities to be catalysts of change in their own right and collaborate with existing public health systems and health care providers to create sustainable improvements in urban health. We have currently 11 programs running across SNEHA which are Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH), Child Health and Nutrition (CHN) – Aahar, Empowerment, Health and Sexuality of Adolescents (EHSAS), Prevention of Violence against Women and Children (PVWC) (e) SNEHA Centre, SNEHA Shakti, Healthy Cities Project (HCP), Samagra, Palliative Care, Livelihood Generation, Central Operations, Research and IM. ABOUT THE PROGRAM: With a concept of “Every woman is empowered” further brings the change in her family and ultimately it helps to bring the change in the community as a whole. With an aim to bringing marginalized girls and women in the mainstream, Swasthya Sevika initiative was started by SNEHA in 2004 with the objectives: a) To educate quality health care professional to support in urban health b) To empower marginalized girls and women between 18 to 35 years. They are mobilized from vulnerable communities of Mumbai. SNEHA’s first center started in Snatacruz in 2004. The second in August 2013 in Govandi The centers are run in two batches morning (9 to 1.30 pm) and afternoon (12.30 to 5.00 pm). The program is run in two locations of Mumbai Santacruz and Kurla. The revised 8 months course model from July 2015 initiated of 4 months theory and 4 months internship. The course provides nursing care, medicine & surgery, gynecology & pediatrics with additional computer and English speaking skills help them to develop confidence, the personality and making the course more holistic in nature. Initiation of “Fun and learn” concept, innovative teaching methodologies are used to make the learning interesting and more easy to understand. Study material and 2 pairs of uniform and apron are provided to the students. • The centers are run by a team which consists of a doctor, nurse, Center-assistant, Community Organizer and managed by a team of Program Coordinator, Program Officer and Chief Executive Officer with a support by consultant doctor and a volunteer counselor. • The majority of the graduates are employed in private hospitals and nursing homes. Their lives have been changed as they make forays into a career and stand on their feet. We keep abreast of current trends and practices of Nurse – aides through our network of doctors and nurses at hospitals and nursing homes. • Project activities includes: mobilization, recruitment & enrolment, parents meet, faculty meet, guest lectures, grooming and motivational sessions, events, celebration of important days, exposure visit, graduation, job placement. • More than 50 batches have successfully completed and more than 1500 Swasthya Sevika trained. • till date since inception and > 60% are continuing the profession. 161 are under training from the SNEHA Nurse Aide Centre at 2 locations Santacruz and Kurla. SNEHA believes in change through such role models and encourages and support to bring the change in the community. THE PROFILE: CONSULTANT -NURSING TEACHER • Teaching nursing care as per the syllabus? • Conducting practical and nursing demonstrations? • Developing teaching material/notes for students in local languages as per the need? • Setting exam papers and conducting viva, monthly and final exams as per the schedule? • Extra coaching to weak students and providing counseling, support and guidance to retain the girls? • Documentation? • Participating in program activities and events? • Giving extra time as per the program need eg. Internal adjustments for teaching or working as locum as and when required? • Bringing innovation/ strategies/ideas in teaching and program to improve? • Adhering to consultant policy? • Commitment to the program at least for a year JOB LOCATION: KURLA DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: • Preparing training calendar and training the students? • Maintaining students records batch wise? • Conducting revisions and practice sessions? • Screening and assessing the students for admission? • Paper corrections and results to maintain? • Counselling to parents/husband? • Assisting team members as required? • Assisting or conducting research studies? • Attending training and meetings? MANAGEMENT & REPORTING: Report weekly to the Program Coordinator • Contribute to the organizational culture and work of SNEHA to an appropriate degree? • Participating in organizational activities? QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: • Degree/Diploma in nursing care, public health certification/ trained nurse or doctor? • Education to /medical or para-medical field- Nursing/Doctor in any field of allopath, homeopathy or Ayurveda? • Experience in teaching skills medical/para-medical subjects? • Skills of interpersonal communication, understanding and assessing the students level of grasping, presentation skill etc.? • Experience in developing teaching material? • Willingness to update knowledge and skills in the medical field? • Ability to maintain role boundaries? • Interest in teaching and working in social sector? • Fluency in English, Hindi and Marathi.? • Self-starting and self-monitoring abilities? • Flexibility in time management? • Ability to resolve conflicts among students and working out solutions as required?
